Well – by this time next year it will all be over – Deloitte RAB 2012 that is.
What will remain are enough good memories to last a lifetime, a group of fantastic new friends, the most incredible feeling of achievement and, of course, a new leaner, fitter version of you! How do I know this? Because this time last year I was contemplating the enormity of the challenge lying ahead as I had just signed up to ride Deloitte RAB 2011.
I have been a cyclist all my life and in my twenties used to race mountain bikes quite competitively. In my thirties I dabbled in triathlon but road biking has always been my passion. At the grand old age of 44, however, I had a long unfulfilled ambition to cycle the famous Land’s End to John O’Groats ride. As each year went by, however, there always seemed to be a host of really good reasons why that year was not quite the right one. Work, children, fitness… I suspect that many of you can relate to this!
Matters came to a head at the Cycle Show at Earls Court in September 2010 when I met up with an old friend, of a similar age, who told me all about the Deloitte RAB event that he had just signed up for. “Hang on a minute” he said [I knew what was coming]; “why don’t you sign up as well?” I immediately thought of about 100 reasons why 2011 was just not the right year. We went our separate ways at the end of the day with me promising to think about it and his parting words ringing in my ears: “If not now… then when?” On returning home, I discussed it with my wife, fully expecting her to bring me to my senses but, to my surprise, she also thought it was a really good idea. So, with little further delay, I called Maz in the Threshold offices and paid my deposit.
I was now committed (!!) and had only 9 months to prepare for the challenge of cycling 960 miles in 9 days. You can read all about my preparation, training, and the ups and downs [literally] of the event itself, on my blog for RAB 2011, www.9daysinjune.com.
There was, however, a problem: The observant amongst you will have noticed that my unfulfilled ambition was to ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats and, last year, WE WENT THE OTHER WAY! Most sensible people would have decided that a “JOGLE” was close enough but, for some reason, a little voice in the back of my head was saying… you still haven’t done it!
This is the reason I have decided to to ride the event again next year and will be joining you all on the start-line at Land’s End on Saturday, 8th Sept 2012.
Like last year, I’m going to be blogging about my training and preparation, equipment choices and other cycling related matters, only this year I’m doing it right here on the Deloitte RAB web-site. Please keep checking back… and see you in Land’s End!
