Congratulations to George Watkins…a hero of 2011. His Guinness World Record has been confirmed and he’s in the record books for the “Fastest journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats (or vice versa) by Elliptical Cycle.”
In early 2011 Deloitte RAB HQ received a call from George Watkins; a young guy from Hertfordshire with a dream to complete the journey from John O’Groats to Land’s End. But, this wasn’t going to be any ordinary journey. George declared that he was going to be riding the 960 mile route on an ElliptiGo bicycle. After a Google search, we soon found out this was going to be something seriously impressive. An ElliptiGO is a fitness device that emulates running outdoors without the associated impact – a barrier to any headwind, and brutal for the body when covering over 100 miles a day.
Two years prior to Deloitte Ride Across Britain 2011 George had been seriously injured in a skiing accident leaving him with multiple bone and internal injuries. He was in a wheelchair for three months and it took him many months to even walk again. But, with the sheer determination that we began to know so well, George set himself targets in order to strive and achieve his goals, which included an Ironman within two years of his accident. His injuries left George unable to complete this journey on a standard road bike, therefore the low impact ElliptiGo was to become his much loved mode of transport.
Throughout the ride, George was an inspiration. Riders out on the road each day were in awe of his attitude and beaming smile that he kept with him from one end of the country to another. He powered through 30mph headwinds, through driving rain over Glencoe, and endured hours each day plugging away mile by mile.

In the words of Philip Coleman (Deloitte RAB 2011 Rider), “George deserves a medal the size of a bicycle wheel”!
Congratulations George, it is such an incredible achievement – we’re super proud of you here at HQ. Enjoy the fame!
