The Journey’s End

Rolling out of the final basecamp at Kyle of Sutherland is a moment many of the riders dream about from about three quarters of the way through the first day. How will it feel packing up the bag for the final time? What will it be like brushing teeth next to tired fellow riders knowing tomorrow you’ll be home? Will it be weird taking the bike from the racking for one final day in the saddle? For some it is keen anticipation as the sense of the goal on the horizon is tantalizingly within reach. For others there is a tinge of melancholy knowing you must imminently return to normal life. Read More…

What a difference a day makes

After Day 7’s monumental efforts, Day 8 seemed relatively trifling in comparison; a mere 111 miles to Kyle of Sutherland. However, as with any day on Deloitte Ride Across Britain the weather is always there in the background threatening to put the best laid plans to waste. Luckily, the gods took pity on us and decided that tailwinds would be the order of the day: Tailwinds and glorious sunshine. Read More…

After 4 days of exceptional weather it was always going to start raining at some point. Around midnight on Day 5 it began.  The tents were hammered by rain throughout the night making sleeping harder and when the sun limped into the sky it illuminated a very soggy group of riders huddled under cover in Haydock. Day 4 is traditionally when the grind of repeated 100 mile plus days begins to tell on the riders. The early enthusiasm is replaced by a stoic determination as the legs remind you that you’ve ridden hundreds of miles already, but your head reminds you that it isn’t even half way yet! However, we were helped out when the forecast heavy rain was conspicuously absent and the camp rose to another glorious morning of sunshine and pink tinged clouds. Read More…

The Beast Before Bath

Another clear day dawned and with it the dulcet tones of PJ and Duncan serenading the assembled riders with, ‘Let’s get ready to rumble’. Everyone seemed to be getting into the swing of things this morning with tents cleared onto the awaiting UPS trucks and teeth being brushed before the sun had even cleared the trees surrounding the site.

Grippy and double grippy

The first day was always going to be a tough one. The notorious Cornish hills are unavoidable in any attempt to complete the End to End. However, this year we were blessed with glorious weather to soften the blow. Read More…

The calm before the… sunshine?

The base camp the day before the start of Deloitte Ride Across Britain is always a heady blend of nerves, anticipation excitement.  Riders fly, bus and train in from across the globe to the furthest South Westerly point of the UK. At the start in John O’Groats last year we were pinned down in the wind and were considering evacuating the camp, but this year we were blessed with clear skies and a light breeze. The legendary druids of Sancreed must have been smiling on us.

The time is fast approaching where we leave the office for 9 days of fresh air and incredible views and we finally get to meet all the riders who are signed up.
