Group riding is faster, safer and just a whole lot more fun
When we first start talking to people about group riding some people get nervous. They think of a peloton inches from each other’s wheels or the fear of being dropped off the back by merciless racers. However, we have found group riding can be the key to making the Deloitte RAB experience such a special one.
You are able to cycle solo if you wish as the course will be fully marked, but we want to take leadership in teaching people the joys of riding in a group. This means we’ll encourage you to get organised in a group with one of our chaperones. We’ll pre-allocate groups through talking to you, getting you along to training rides, encouraging you to join a cycling club and through riding regular chain gang sessions. Our experience to date tells us that less experienced riders who may have slower speed will have a more enjoyable time on Deloitte RAB if they have practiced and ride in a group during the event. Many of our spring and summer training rides will coach these skills.
Cycling and being able to hold a conversation generally means you are at the right pace – that’s the way to judge if you are in the right group and if you’re not, no problem, we‘ll change you down or up.
Group riding is much safer….why?
- You are more visible as a group to other road users and vehicles wanting to over-take will perform 1 over-taking manoeuvre instead of several.
- You move quicker as a peloton conserving energy by drafting – this means we minimise tiredness & exhaustion.
- You are in amongst friends (and your chaperones) if you have a mechanical problem or a puncture so you can get quick assistance.
There’ll be experienced chaperones with each group and we’ll work hard before the ride to ensure you are in the right group from the start and throughout the ride. There’ll be opportunities to change if the group isn’t working out for you.
